I am an experienced mum of 4 wonderful children, a boy and 3 girls and live with my family in Leeds.
I remember very little of my own first birth experience in 1989. It was very clinical and I was in a drugged daze for most of it. I was determined that in future I would have more control and be able to have my choice of birth experience. My determination allowed me to become increasingly empowered with each subsequent birth and I enjoyed every one.

I remember very little of my own first birth experience in 1989. It was very clinical and I was in a drugged daze for most of it. I was determined that in future I would have more control and be able to have my choice of birth experience. My determination allowed me to become increasingly empowered with each subsequent birth and I enjoyed every one.
Whilst practising as an NHS Children's Dietitian and working extensively with pregnant mums and families to address nutritional and feeding problems I often found myself developing strong trusting relationships with the women. Drawing on my experience and knowledge I was able to support these women with other concerns which they felt they wanted to discuss such as birth choices, practical breast feeding issues and sibling behaviour. Because I found this extended role so rewarding and it seemed to fill a gap which modern antenatal and postnatal services were too slim to fill I decided to train as a Doula.
I love everything about motherhood and babies and I passionately believe every woman has a right to the birth of their choice. However, this isn't always the reality in the modern NHS. Sadly, many decisions in labour are not based on patient choice and clinical judgement but on available staff time and resources. This means that the midwives are not always able to give the one to one care in a way in which they would like. A Birth Doula can bridge this widening gap by offering unconditional support throughout labour.
I believe that childbirth is such a natural and important moment in a woman’s journey, the experience having powerful repercussions (positive or negative) for months and years later. I have a strong desire to be able to support women emotionally and practically through the antenatal, birth and post natal periods so they may enjoy childbirth and the early days with their newborn as much as I did.
I completed a recognised Doula training course with "Nurturing Birth" in January 2008 and am a trainee Doula working towards full recognition with Doula UK.
